As many of you will recall, Huw Edwards played host at the BIBA 2019 Conference & Exhibition and, by popular demand, kindly joins us again for BIBA 2021.
This is a must-see session. John Glen MP is the Economic Secretary to the Treasury and City Minister, with responsibility for Insurance. In discussion with BIBA Executive Director, Graeme Trudgill, Mr Glen will give an economic overview along with his views on the current issues in the general insurance broking sector during one of the most challenging periods it has ever faced.

John Glen was appointed Economic Secretary to the Treasury and City Minister on 9 January 2018. He was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport from 14 June 2017 to 8 January 2018, and Parliamentary Private Secretary to Philip Hammond from July 2016 until June 2017. John was first elected to Parliament as the MP for Salisbury in 2010. He previously worked for the Eric Pickles and Sajid Javid as a Parliamentary Private Secretary.
Graeme Trudgill

Before joining BIBA Graeme was a general insurance broker between 1989 and 2001. He is a member of BIBA’s main board and leads the BIBA Policy Team that incorporates corporate affairs, technical services, and communications. He is personally responsible for BIBA’s Public Affairs lobby with Government, has provided written and oral evidence to the House of Commons and the House of Lords and is the author of the annual BIBA Manifesto. Graeme’s knowledge of insurance and the sector is wide-ranging, and he regularly appears as a source of expertise in the media where he promotes the benefits of using a broker.

Steve Richards is an author, columnist and BBC presenter. His latest book is ‘Prime Ministers- Reflections on Leadership from Wilson to Johnson’. He regularly presents Radio 4’s The Week in Westminster and has written columns for the Independent, Guardian, Times and FT. Steve has presented a series of unscripted television talks on modern Prime Ministers entitled Leadership Reflections, another series on “Turning Points in British Politics”, and a further series ‘Reflections: The Prime Ministers We Never Had’… the theme of his next book. He hosts a one-man show, Rock N Roll Politics, that sells out in London and the Edinburgh Festival. Steve is also a regular commentator on SKY and the BBC.

Carl Shuker

Carl Shuker began his career at A-Plan in Oxford in 1981 and has had many roles within the business. He was appointed as Deputy CEO in 2000, has been the A-Plan CEO since 2008, and has taken the business through two MBOs. The Group has just been acquired by Howden.
A-Plan has been established since 1963 and operates through a growing network of 100 High Street branches and centres, focused mainly on personal lines, High Net Worth, specialist and SME business. As well as A-Plan Insurance, the Group includes Assured Futures (a protection only life assurance intermediary), KGM Underwriting, Endsleigh Insurance and Vast Visibility.
Ian Donaldson

Ian Donaldson is CEO of the Atlanta Group one of the largest and fastest-growing brokers in the UK insurance market and part of the worldwide Ardonagh Group. Entrepreneur Ian, created Autonet in 1998 from a standing start of zero policies. Organic growth and success followed, and they quickly became the UK’s largest van insurer. Ambitious acquisition growth began in 2016 and Atlanta currently incorporates digitally focused retail brands Carole Nash, Swinton Insurance, Paymentshield, Lloyd Latchford and Healthy Pets. With a net worth of over £1bn, 2500 colleagues based in 11 locations and servicing 2.6m customers, acquisition growth will continue as Atlanta secures its position as the industry leading digital broker.
Ashwin Mistry OBE

Ashwin has over 40 years’ experience in general insurance and broking, starting his career at Guardian Royal Exchange and becoming a Director at Brett and Randall in 1983. Following B&R’s organic success, Ashwin was instrumental in establishing the Brokerbility network. After leading a management buyout in 2009, the BHL group grew substantially and earlier this year joined forces with Clear Insurance Group. Ashwin was a member of the National Skills Task Force under the then Secretary of State, Rt Hon David Blunkett, looking at the issue of skill shortages for UK Plc. In 2000 he was awarded an OBE for his contribution to Careers Education.

Damian Glynn is Head of Financial Risks at Sedgwick. As both a Chartered Loss Adjuster and Chartered Accountant, he has chaired the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters (CILA) Business Interruption (BI) group for the past 13 years and has previously set BI examinations for them. He is a published author on the subject of BI and has run financial loss seminars in the UK and abroad for almost 30 years. Over the last decade, Damian has acted as an expert witness in both his accountant and adjuster capacities.
Catherine Dixon

Catherine has over 30 years’ experience in the commercial SME & mid-corporate insurance industry, holding positions in Underwriting, Risk Control and Portfolio Management with Allianz Insurance. She was appointed to the role of Director of Underwriting & Technical for Allianz in 2016. In her current role she leads the Commercial Technical function, developing and embedding sound underwriting and portfolio steering capabilities, liaising with Regional UK & Allianz Global Teams and ensuring adherence to governance frameworks, both internal and external market regulator requirements. Catherine plays a leading role in the Allianz Technical Excellence Programme, both within the UK and globally.

Vivienne Hexter

Vivienne is Head of Technical for Aon’s Commercial Risks, Health and Affinity division and a member of the Aon Global Technical Practice. ACII qualified, with over 30 years industry experience, Vivenne is responsible for writing and agreeing Aon’s policy wordings and providing technical support. She is responsible for investigating changes in the market, law and other challenges and provides guidance on such topics. Vivienne recently participated in the Lloyds Restart Covid BI project and was a contributor to the book ‘Business Interruption Policy Wordings – challenges highlighted by claims’. She is Chair of BIBA’s Property Committee and President of the London Business Interruption Association.

Claire’s vision is to lead a global shift in mental health in the workplace. With her lived experience of mental ill health and losing her partner to suicide in 2018; she is passionate about helping to effect change, break down taboos and open up the conversation about mental health. Aside from the work that she does in MHIB, Claire is a co-director of Appletons, a Midlands insurance brokers. She is also a prolific speaker – speaking candidly about her own experiences. She continues to be a committed volunteer, giving much of her time to her local Samaritans branch.

Jonathan Evans

Jonathan Evans is a Solicitor specialising in insurance law and was Director of Insurance at a City law firm. Jonathan served in government in the 1990s with responsibility for the Insurance industry during the Lloyd’s R&R project. He also chaired the All Party Parliamentary Group on Insurance & Financial Services from 2010 to 2015, and served two decades in the House of Commons and the European Parliament. He was a Director with the NFU Mutual Insurance Group, Chairman of the Pearl Group Ltd, Phoenix Life companies and Allied World Managing Agency Ltd, a subsidiary of Fairfax Financial, which writes complex specialist general insurance business at Lloyd’s.
Laura High
Deputy Chair, BIBA
Director of Newmarket insurance broking and underwriting business, Yutree. Laura started her insurance career with Norwich Union in 1995. She joined The Davis Group in 2004. When The Davis Group sold to Bluefin in 2007, Laura was appointed as Bluefin’s Director of Distribution. Laura is a qualified Member of the Institute of Leadership & Management, Cert CII, a qualified Mental Health First Aider, Chairman of The British Insurance Brokers Association’s Anglia region and Deputy Chair of the main board of BIBA. Outside of work, Laura is a keen artist and enjoys time with her family and walking, cycling, and going to the gym.
Steve White

Steve was appointed Chief Executive of BIBA in May 2013 and leads from the front in promoting, assisting and understanding insurance brokers and their issues. He has spent 40 years in the insurance industry, working for the Orion Insurance Company, the General Insurance Standards Council and the Financial Services Authority, prior to joining BIBA in March 2004, as Head of Compliance & Training. Steve sits on the Directors’ Committee of BIPAR (the European Federation of Insurance Intermediaries) and the Executive Committee of WFII (the World Federation of Insurance Intermediaries). He is also a board member of the CII’s Society of Insurance Brokers.

Elizabeth founded and led Facebook’s EMEA region Politics and Government division. She was instrumental in building links between the social media giant and branches of government and politics around the world, accompanying Mark Zuckerberg on his first European tour. Now heading her own consultancy, The Conversational Century, she aims to improve the conversation between the public, business, and political leaders. She is also a Senior Consulting Fellow at Chatham House where she leads the think-tank’s Connectivity Initiative and advises on the future of foreign policy in a connected world.

Phil Bayles

Since joining Aviva in 2002, Phil has undertaken a number of trading and distribution roles in the broker and partnerships channel. In April 2013 he was appointed as Intermediary and Partnerships Director, leading the trading, sales and branch network across the UK. Phil was appointed as Intermediaries MD in May 2017 with responsibility for sales and distribution across Aviva’s Broker & GI Partner business. In September 2019, Phil was appointed Chief Distribution Officer with additional responsibility of Aviva’s Bancassurance relationships. Phil is a member of the General Insurance Council Management Committee of the ABI.
Jane Kielty
Managing Director, UK Retail, Aon and BIBA Board Member
Jane Kielty joined Aon in 2005 and has 19 years’ experience in the broking and risk management industry. During her time at Aon, Jane has built her career moving from client director, through several leadership roles to become Managing Director of the UK Retail business where clients range from large Corporates to SMEs and private clients. In her current role, Jane is responsible for over a thousand colleagues who deliver risk and insurance solutions. She is actively involved with clients across all segments of Aon’s UK business, is a Chartered Insurance Broker, a member of BIBA’s Professional Standards Committee and a former BIBA Regional Chair.
Richard Webb
Director, Manchester Underwriting Management
Richard has over 30 years’ insurance experience and started his career with General Accident. In 2000, Richard moved to Hiscox Insurance Company where he took on responsibility for establishing the London Branch underwriting professional indemnity, commercial and high value household insurances. During 2004, Richard moved to HCC International as a Director of the Professional Indemnity Division. In 2008, he took on the role of Head of Marketing & Broker Development working with all underwriting divisions of HCC International, before joining Manchester Underwriting Management in 2010, where he is the Director with responsibility for Claims and for Marketing and Broker Development.
Peter Blanc
Group Chief Executive Officer,
Aston Lark
Peter owned his own brokerage which he sold to Oval in 2007. He went on to become CEO in 2012 and sold the business to Gallagher in April 2014. In May 2015 Peter joined Aston Scott and led the merger with Lark Group in 2017. As Group CEO of Aston Lark he now leads a business with over 1,000 staff across 36 locations writing over £500m of gross written premium. Peter is also non-executive chairman of the broker arm of Hastings Direct, and was previously chairman of the Large Brokers’ Advisory Board at BIBA. In October 2020 Peter was appointed deputy president of the CII.

Rob Anarfi

Rob Anarfi has been Beazley’s global head of compliance for five years, having originally joined the group in 2012 as head of internal audit. During his time as chair of Beazley’s diversity & inclusion steering group, Beazley made significant progress enhancing the gender diversity of its senior leadership team. Rob now chairs RACE@Beazley, the group’s network focussed on race and ethnicity, but he remains a strong and active ally for all under-represented groups. Before joining Beazley, Rob held senior audit roles at the Financial Conduct Authority, Allianz, Zurich and Aviva. He qualified as a chartered accountant with PwC.

Sima is a senior qualified General Insurance Actuary with strong commercial acumen. She has extensive Pricing, Reserving and Capital experience across several large multi-national insurers and a big 4 consulting firm. At AIG, she is responsible for pricing and reserving across the UK, EMEA, Global Specialty and Talbot businesses totalling $8.6bn net written premiums. Sima was named in the 2020 Insurance Business Global 100. This highlights the very best leaders in the industry who are making a real difference in the market. In 2018, Sima was named an honoree of the ‘Women to Watch EMEA’ award recognising women leaders doing outstanding work in risk management and commercial insurance. Sima has since joined the Board of this foundation.
Barbara Schönhofer

Barbara set out 20 years ago to better understand the complexities of what it takes to change thinking and action in insurance. She started by bringing together businesswomen to share experiences and exchange ideas forming the Insurance Supper Club with other female leaders and from here branching out to an international community of women in insurance operating at C suite and board level. Four years’ ago ISC Group established as a full time CIC membership organisation, then in 2018 launched an associate company ISC France. In 2019 it opened membership to aspiring female leaders and this year welcomed all women with work lives in the insurance sector.

Jason Groves is Global Director of Media Relations at Marsh and Chair of Dive In – the Festival for promoting greater diversity and inclusion in the global insurance sector. Prior to joining Marsh in 2006, Jason was Editor at The Review, one of the world’s oldest financial magazines and a leading commentator on the insurance sector. He is the founder and executive sponsor for Marsh’s UK Pride Network and acts as a mentor to many LGBT business executives in the insurance and charity sector. Jason is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and a Freeman of the City of London.
